Maryke, welcome to the 2018 Midlands Bridal Fair. We are so excited to introduce you and your business to our Brides- and Grooms-to-be!
We’d love to know more about you and how you got into the industry…
Designing wedding dresses are part of my soul and sewing pulses through my veins. I used to sew tissues together during kindergarten break times – armed with a tapestry needle and wool, I sewed these tissue creations for my Barbie dolls. I’ve been collecting Bridal magazines since 1989 which, subsequently, was also the year I sewed my first outfit. And so, at the tender age of 9 my love-affair with all things wedding dress related began.
What services and expertise does your business offer to clients?
I believe it is more than a dress. It is the process of capturing the dream inside each Bride and turning it into reality. It is the journey of transforming the seemingly ordinary (and I say seemingly because no human being is ordinary) and transforming it into the most beautiful and spectacular imaginable.
As a designer I merge my classic style with a Bride’s personal measurements, taste and requirements. Each Maryke wedding dress is handmade with an impeccable fit, meticulous detailing and the use of the finest materials – these are synonymous with a Maryke design.
I also have a ready-to-purchase collection called ‘Bespoke by Maryke’ which is available at select South African Bridal boutiques.
How long have you been doing this for?
What do you love most about the work you do?
The journey that leads to the moment when a Bride steps into her completed dress – it’s magical.
What differentiates your business and makes you stand out? What are you known for?
My sheer passion for what I do. I often feel so enthusiastic about a Bride in her dress that I catch myself doing a little hop and jump from excitement. Often I’ll also shed the odd tear when the veil goes on and everyone else’s tissues appear.
And then of course I am also known for beautifully hand crafted couture quality wedding dresses.
What can visitors to the Midlands Bridal Fair expect to see from you at the fair?
Beautiful wedding dresses from my 2018 ‘Bespoke by Maryke’ collection.
Any client testimonial/s you’d like to share?
“Not just was Maryke such an awesome person to work with but she made my dream wedding dress. It was perfect in every way! I highly recommend Maryke to anyone who would like their fairytale wedding dress made, she is absolutely brilliant in everything she does.” – Chantelle
‘“I just want to say a very big thank you for the awesome dress. But it is not only the dress, you made the whole experience so fun and awesome and you were so friendly. I really appreciate all your effort and I cannot wait to show off your beautiful design next weekend. You are one in a million. Thank you.”
I even get thank you’s from grooms sometimes, which brought the realisation home that it truly is more than a dress. There is a man, madly in love with the woman he will be spending the rest of his days with waiting at the other end of this whole process. And I simply cannot resist a good love story:
“Hi Maryke, just wanted to say thank you for making such an exquisite wedding dress for my wife Megan King! Yesterday was truly memorable and it was well complemented by your work. Many thanks.” – Ryan King
Tell us what inspires you. Any websites, people or companies that you follow?
Beautiful fabric and laces along with a Bride’s personality is where my biggest inspiration is found. As with all things creative though inspiration isn’t just found in one place, so other areas of creative interest is beautiful flowers, the sound of summer rain, the laughter of a child and I have a ‘thing’ for branding.
Any upcoming wedding trend forecasts?
Three dimensional flower detail has been very prominent on international Bridal runways as well as local fabrics and laces. Halter neck designs are still coming through often and low back or open back designs as well as long sleeves are also popular.
What advice would you give to Brides- and/or Grooms-to-be?
To please follow you own heart and instincts. To be true to yourself and each other.
